I can’t wait to go do some filing! Said no one EVER! Majority of us will wait as long as possible to put it off and more often than not its because we just don’t have the time to create an easy way to manage it.
Below are some tips to help keep on top of it:
⭐Gather it all in one place – you need to see what you have before you can properly sort
⭐Sort and sift – what categorise do you need to have – what makes sense to you? Do you have to keep manuals even? Can you download PDF copies and save them rather than the paper versions?
⭐Work out what it needs to do for you so you can manage it properly – only keep what you need and think about what can go digital. Go paperless where possible, bank, utilities, what you feel comfortable with having online – do it
⭐Once you see what you have you can decide how best to store and also ensure you are choosing something to make it easy. One concertina file for house hold stuff and one for personal, no hole punching but pop items in their section, most recent at front
⭐Deal with the post as it arrives - open, look at, put to be actioned, be aware of and file – half the battle is to get rid of the envelopes and rubbish as they come in
⭐Invest in a small shredder, I get rid of older stuff from the back that is no longer relevant as I go
⭐Create a dedicated space that is easy to access for this
⭐Older files that need to be kept can be tidied and stored - these days most records can be kept digitally. You know what you need – you don’t have to keep everything!

Find a system that is not complicated for you. Create the habits to support them. Don’t let the piles of doom build up. The first stage may take time but once you have found your system, its much easier to keep on top.
If you already have gone through what you can and now have a huge amount of shredding to be done, there are domestic shred services available that you can contact and book to come take it all away for a reasonable fee and you will receive a certificate to confirm this has been securely done.
