The Christmas countdown is on — and so is the mental load. School events, festive outings, food planning, gifting, wrapping, home prep… and that’s before work deadlines and family admin.

Here’s the thing: you don’t have to do it all.

These are the things that are often on the list at this time of year and ideas on how to lighten the load:

🎭 School events – Share reminders and divide who attends what if you can't do all.

🎄 Festive outings – Choose one or two, and let go of the rest.

🍽️ Food planning – Delegate prep or order pre-made sides. What are you actually going to eat? If no one ends up eating it then let it go.

🎁 Gifting – Create a shared list and divide buying things or allocate the people to buy for - you don't have to be the one to think about it all.

📦 Wrapping & posting – Remember the Royal Mail can collect from home now so you don't have to spend ages in post office queues.

🏠 Home prep – Is it worth getting a one off help to blitz things or can you set aside an hour and make it a family team challenge and then celebrate with a quick win dinner of pizzas and a Xmas movie night?

💼 Work deadlines – Block time and communicate boundaries. End of. This is your festive season to enjoy too!

🧳 Family admin – Use shared calendars and tell other adults involved to set their own reminders - you are not there to be their PA. This one is key as I often hear folks saying even if their partner does stuff, it is still up to them to act as their reminder. That is not taking it off your plate as you are still having to think about it.

💆‍♀️ Self-care – Book it in like a meeting. Non-negotiable and you will need some space for whatever that looks like for you.

✅ Start by listing everything on your plate.

✅ Ask: Does it have to be me?

✅ Delegate where you can and leave them to do it.

✅ Let go of perfection. Done is better than perfect.

Delegation allows everyone to be involved; doing less of what drains you; and gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy their efforts of creating some special moments of time together.
